Where the work actually is
Writing the code is the cheap part now.
AI has made building an app far quicker, and we use it every day. That is part of why our price is what it is, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. But something that works on the machine it was built on is not yet a product. Here is what the rest of the job is, and what you are actually paying for.
- It is correct. The path where everything goes right is the easy half. We go through the empty screen, the wrong input, the lost connection and the action someone abandons halfway, because that is where an app loses a person for good.
- It is fast on the phone people actually own. Not only on a new one. Small screens, four-year-old Androids, a weak signal, a low battery. An app that is smooth in a demo and slow in a pocket has not been tested, and we test on the hardware your users hold.
- It is good to use. Reachable with one thumb, readable at arm's length, and honest about what it is doing. Every wait says it is waiting and every failure says what failed. This is the part people can feel and cannot name, and it is the difference between an app someone keeps and one they delete.
- The data is safe, and this one matters most. We ask for the fewest permissions the app can work with, keep on the device everything that can stay on the device, and encrypt whatever has to travel. Nothing is sold, and nothing is quietly passed to a third party for analytics. The app tells the truth about what it collects, because we build our own apps that way and would not ship yours to a lower standard.
- It gets into the stores. Apple and Google turn down more apps over privacy declarations, permissions and account deletion than over anything in the code. We handle the submission and everything around it, so the release is a date rather than a surprise.
